Last Saturday, team Appleyard and Turbo Tom headed over to Blue Wahoos Stadium for some high-octane tailgating before the University of West Florida Argonauts took on the Valdosta State Blazers. (Y’all might not know it, but Turbo Tom was born here, so as far as we’re concerned, he’s family.)
Anyway, Turbo Tom’s other family, Tom Thumb Food Stores, is a proud sponsor of UWF Argonauts Football, so Turbo Tom spent the pregame greeting tailgaters, posing for photos with fans and handing out koozies, Frisbees and other fun swag. Then he joined Argonauts mascot Argie in getting the crowd all revved up for some fast and furious football action.
During the game, Turbo Tom and Argie joined representatives from UWF and the Florida Lottery for a check presentation for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which has awarded $91.6 million in scholarships to University of West Florida students.
Created in 1997, the Bright Futures Scholarship Program has contributed more than $5 billion in lottery-funded scholarships to help send more than 750,000 high-achieving Florida students to college.
The Florida Lottery has contributed $32 billion to education since 1988, with $1.64 billion allocated for FY 2016-17, including $226 million budgeted for the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
Why, you might ask, was Turbo Tom there? Well, Tom Thumb Food Stores sell a lot of Florida Lottery tickets to help fund the Bright Futures Scholarship Program. So, keep buying those tickets, folks. You’ll have a 1 in 22,957,480 chance of winning the big jackpot, but a 100% chance of helping bright students have a brighter future.
